Grieving Summer Leaves snatched away by wind, mulched away by snow The last birds skip along barren branches And hunt in futile hope through brittle leaves The sun bleaches a dry and desolate sky Into a drear and graying shell Then evening drops its muffling cloak Letting frozen stars prick the black night Winter leans in to grieve the loss of summer To grieve the loss of a love ~~~ Final Words For Jennifer Dearest Jennifer; Arms wide, gathering in Big smiles, big hugs, always a welcome Comedy and tragedy on stage and off A compendium of life well lived But her sweet light has dimmed to darkness The heavens should blink and shrug off indifference Let soft lights illumine this final ascent His loving hand showing her the way ~~~ Brilliant Brilliant is the coat of linen snow against winter's pewter sky. A plow has kissed the road edge leaving windblown soft-curved lips. The sun is tamed heat in the stretching cold, hinting of an end to come. But not in this bright shadowed afternoon. Against snow, trees are drear skeletons sketched in brown. Their haut couture so distant now more memory than possibility. For this is the middle season of this road's life. But one day these trees will swell with their redressing And become a canopy without memory of these lips cold and brilliant. ~~~ We Touch We touch, we hug, we kiss You bless the day we met I wear that blessing on my heart You are my heart I love you with all of it The years of being with you Are years of becoming for me I wear that blessing on my being You are my being I love you with all of it ~~~ Flavored Honey A brilliant afternoon between Christmas and New Years Sun bright, air dry and clean, a champagne day Cecil dog and I have just walked through it Some snow, maybe four inches or so Now back home at my writing desk Wonderful Dinsmore is with me Pachelbel sweetens the air A life of flavored honey ~~~ Memento I have a memento on a wall of my home. A winter tree, bare limbs poking leafless mementos of warmer days. A memento to an arboreal god for softer weather. The tree bark background a memento of the forest home. All together a memento of safer times. The whole a memento of just one point of circling life. All in all, a memento of you. ~~~ Spillway Life has contracted to a spillway In those earliest years a still pond Faint ripples reaching to the boundaries Bouncing back light echoes of understanding Then outflow as a trickle, then a stream Thought tumbling over rocks of argument Now a river, once a millrace, Then a rush to become a lake Milling, no direction, stilling, nascent Until spillway release, manic narrowing descent This life done, all errors scoured And lost in the sea of the ongoing world ~~~ Breathe Deep Between Christmas and New Years Some snow, maybe four inches or so Sun bright, air dry and clean A champagne day We have walked in it Now back home Pachabel playing Life is sweet Breathe deep ~~~ Murmurs In My Dreaming (Anonymous) A limb has fallen from the family tree. And I hear a voice that says, "Grieve not for me. Remember the best times. The laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don't worry about falls. I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin. Until the day comes when we're together again.” ~~~ Quatrains For Children A Caravan of Camels came loping by Long strides, heads riding high Looking for fruit trees Higher than their knees # A Pounce of Cats were hiding out Waving their whiskers and looking about Watching for mice running at play Hoping a dinner would come their way # A Clutch of Chickens pecked along Sure they had done nothing wrong Until a rooster strutted by King of the flock head held high # A Bask of Crocodiles, snouts in the mud Swing their tales in a rhythmic thud Keeping time and circling a stump Feet slapping down with a gurgling thump # A Murder of Crows flocked to a tree Hopping branches restless as could be Cawing at each other in angry screech A noisy form of birdy speech # An Army of Caterpillars no one in command Squirmed to the music of a silent band Tuning this way and that way For no reason you could say # A Pod of dolphins swam in a group Round and round in a loop de loop Looking for smaller fish as a treat A dinner meal gulped, short and sweet # A Raft of Ducks went paddling by Silently searching with careful eye Then dipping quickly to grab a fish And raising a tail in a victory swish # A Convocation of Eagles in the sky Talons fearsome, hard to deny Silent like a cloud of arrows Looking over a bunch of sparrows # A Herd of Elephants went thumping by Nothing they do could be on the sly Weaving and waving as if on a ship All of them together in partnership # A Parliament of Owls gathered one day To discuss serious matters they would say They hem, haw, harrumph and mutter In soft sounds of wisdom-like clutter.
